Making education accessible: e-learning in Myanmar
In the last five years, adoption of mobile technology in Myanmar has been dramatic, and along with it, the demand for e-learning. Find out how the digital revolution has impacted Thabyay Education Foundation and its students.

Around the world, 103 million young people don't have basic literacy skills and 57 million children do not attend school¹. Poverty and geography are two key barriers to accessing education. In 2013 the Myanmar government made a move that, indirectly, has had a huge impact on addressing these accessibility issues. The unrestricted market meant that, for the first time, the average Myanmarese was able to afford a smartphone and usage rose from 10% in 2013 to 90% in 2016. The country is now the leader for growth in e-learning in Asia, at a rate of 50.2% ² . Educational institutes saw the change in the way people were accessing information and took the opportunity to digitise. Thabyay Education Foundation (TEF) is one such institution. For the last 20 years, TEF has been working with communities in Yangon, the biggest city in Myanmar, to provide higher education and professional development in order to promote social justice, fostering reconciliation, alleviating marginalisation and supporting sustainable development.
Recognising the opportunity to reach more people by digitising their courses, TEF knew they needed to update their Learning Management System, and so formed the E-Learning Professional and Personal Development (EPPD). The project is increasing the reach of the institution by granting digital access to students studying by distance and make accessible the resources of Educasia and the Curriculum Project, the resource development and publishing house for TEF.
Using the IMC Content Studio, TEF undertook the redevelopment of the Student Guide. The complex text guide was a barrier to students learning, who were only starting to learn English. Using IMC Content Studio, the team was able to transform the guide with interactions, links, videos and audio; resulting in user-friendly content that complemented the new LMS visually. Adding interactive elements not only makes content easier to understand, but it also increases engagement resulting in higher rates of completion and information retention³. It was essential that all content created by TEF was accessible by mobile and responsive in design, a feature of IMC Content Studio.
