Learn to Analyze Educational Data and Improve your Online Teaching

How can online courses be better adapted to the needs of their participants? Difficult to understand explanations or even too simple knowledge tests frustrate users. By analyzing educational data like course usage, a course author or tutor can localize and fix weak spots. To support the development of basic competences for Educational Data Analytics in online learning scenarios the Learn2Analyze Consortium now offers a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Educational Data Literacy.

2. October 2019

Learning should become more efficient! In the innovation project Learn2Analyze, four universities, IMC and two other companies work on this objective. Analysing usage data in online courses can reveal that many users do not receive optimal support. Difficult to understand course sections, too difficult or even too simple knowledge tests frustrate learners which leads to high dropout rates or low knowledge acquisition.

This could be remedied, for example by giving additional explanations if a user has difficulties at a certain point. However, many course authors and e-trainers do not know how to apply learning analytics methods and tools to localize and fix these weak spots.

Support is now provided by the EU co-funded knowledge alliance "Learn2Analyze" which started in January 2018. In Learn2Analyze, four universities, IMC and two other companies developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Educational Data Literacy. The MOOC entitled "Learn to Analyze Educational Data and Improve your Blended and Online Teaching" supports the development of the basic competences for Educational Data Analytics of Online and Blended teaching and learning. It is ideal for course authors, e-trainers or other e-learning professionals working with online and blended courses.

The course combines theory on collecting, analysing, interpreting and using educational data (including issues related with ethics and privacy) with practice on applying educational data analytics in three different e-learning platforms. For example, in one course module learning analytics tools of the IMC Learning Suite are presented. The course starts 21st of October 2019 and it will last for 8 weeks leading to a free Certification of Achievement in Educational Data Literacy. The course is open for enrolments at OpenCourseWorld and interested users can already start analysing their related interests and skills.
