University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien

Innovative e-learning solutions in teaching and for entrance selection process

With more than 1,000 alumni, over 2,000 students and 11 Bachelor – and Master programmes of study, Vienna’s first University of Applied Sciences is the largest further education college for technical studies. Study materials have been being systematically prepared using e-learning since 2005. In the winter semester 2006-7, computer supported testing (eTesting) has been introduced for the entrance selction process.

The challenge
For the multitude of students who work supportive leaning material alongside lectures are an integral part of studying. Paper document and pdfs are soon to be a thing of the past at the Technikum Wien. More and more learning materials are available on the Internet-Platform in the form of e-learning courses.

The project
Since 2005, he creation of courses has been taking place internally with POWERTRAINER. With a campus licence, Technikum Wien has access to an unlimited number of POWERTRAINER licences for the creation of courses and exams. Primarily technically orientated courses for electonics have been developed. In the mid – to long- term, all programmes of study are to be catered for by individually tailored courses. With its simple graphic interface, IMC’s Learning Management System allows the administration of learning and courses as well as the comprehensive overview of tests and exams. In the winter semester 2006/07, computer supported testing (eTesting) has been introduced in the framework of applications to the University of Applied Sciences. After a simple self-registration applicants sit an entrance exam in which their strengths and interests are identified. The application process is made up of an e-learning test for maths, logical thinking, English and a personality test. The result can be given immediately after the end of the test. After this there is a personal interview with the director of studies. The LMS has been adapted to the special wishes of Technikum Wien for the application process.

Customer Feedback
Mag. Dietmar NESTLANG, Manager of infrastructure, University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien:
"POWERTRAINER supports us whilst we are dealing with shorter and shorter attendance times. Above all, students who also work get a very flexible solution with e-learning which is independent of location, whereby they can recap study materials and test their knowledge in chapter using self evaluation.  With the help of POWERTRAINER, learning materials can be distributed to all students easily and quickly in a didactically appropriate form.  A further clear advantage by the choice of POWERTRAINER was the usability. The entrance tests with the idividually adapted Learning Management System save us time, unnecessary stress and last but not least personnel costs. The main criteria for the decision for POWERTRAINER were user friendliness, flexible course assignment and the service of the provider."
